What's with the focus on 'sold out'? Simply limit your passes well below the projected numbers of participants, and there you go, sold out. It's just a math game and a marketing ploy.

You have to consider the problems that Apple has had with heat and portables of late. There would likely be heat issues with such a portable, which makes it even more plausible that Apple won't make such a portable.
I think this 10.5" 3lbs sounds possible. I don't think they would ever try to fit it with high-end proc's which would be like begging for heat issues. That Lifebook mentioned earlier is also running with "only" 1.2GHz Pentium M which I'm sure is enough for a machined sized that small. But 2000$ is quite a big price to pay. That's why I think this could be a place for Apple to take control over. But not anytime soon though.

it seems that there is no longer an option for the "matte" screen, only the glossy one.

That option NEVER existed for MacBooks, only for MacBook Pros.

Completely depleted is too strong a word. But, waiting for existing inventories to be relatively low before a release makes sense.

Anyway, we shall see. I can't wait until the wait is over and I can move on to deciding which new model makes for the best investment.

I think if you look at BB inventory, international apple store inventory, and a few online resellers, it's pretty clear that stocks are running down. What's odd is that a few places seem to have run their sales and depleted their stock, but had to replenish. I think everyone's surprised at how long the wait has been, resellers included.

There's no such thing as a good investment in computers... The best you can do is hope to minimize your loss and get something with decent resale value like, oh, a Mac. :)

I happen to work for a vendor that supplies Walmart.. I believe this story to be true.. Walmart breaks the antitrust laws everyday.. and get away with it since they bribe and payoff key people in the goverment.(They call it contributions)

I know a vendor(He owned the company) who supplied Walmart with quality vacuums and vacuum accessories.. Walmart decided that they wanted a better price for his vacuums and so they demanded that he cut the price of his vacuums by 30% and that he downgrades the build quality(They had a 10 year guarantee) so they would break down more often thus forcing people to buy more vacuums.

He was in the 4th year of a 10 year contract where it stipulated that HE decided the pricing and everything.. So he refused to lower the price of the vacuums since he would ACTUALLY LOSE MONEY if he sold them at the price Walmart wanted.. Walmart tore up his contract and kicked him out of the store.. when he threatened to sue them for breach of contract they laughed and told him to do it.. it would end up costing him millions to successfully sue Walmart and he would lose money if he attempted that.

When I look at Apple's app reviewing, I think about how Nintendo did gatekeeping in the 80's in order to maintain the quality of its game library. A few third party developers got pissed, you had the black cartridges, but it worked out in Nintendo's favor.

To me the gatekeeping is just a business decision. It's not perfect but it does filter out a lot of crap out there. Apple just has to streamline their review process to be more consistent

And those who say that this is just an upgrade price are incorrect. This is the full retail price for a complete boxed install set.All Mac OS packages sold on their own are upgrade kits.

Under the EULA you can only run Mac OS's on Mac Hardware and all Mac computers come with the OS. So what you are buying is an upgrade.

Under the EULA you cannot buy and install a Mac OS for a computer that didn't already come with the Mac OS.

ALL Mac OS's sold on their own are upgrades.

    I don't understand this.

Right now, I move my finger about an inch on a touchpad to move the cursor from one corner of the screen to another.

With a big monitor, I would have to lift my entire arm, carefully place my finger on a 1/8 inch spot, move my entire arm 24 inches to the other corner of the screen, all the time putting fingerprints on my screen.

Nope. I don't get it. A touchscreen for a desktop computer seems like useless "gee-whiz" garbage.

Unless the touchscreen is like those ones on CNN, used for specialized presentations. Or built into a table. Or one comprising a wall where you can draw stuff. Or something (anything!) where touch is an advantage.

    But for a desktop machine?

Calling Apple a hardware company is like calling McDonalds a hamburger stand.

And that would be an insult to all of the other hamburger stands!

Incidentally, Apple dealers aren't selling Macs with XP "pre-installed," they are doing it as an after-market add-on. To pre-install, they'd have to be Microsoft OEMs. I don't think we want Apple to become one of those.

Thanks Jason. I have 2 150watt strobes, softbox covers and umbrellas as desired. Do your strobes have light sync? One trick I've discovered is to mount a flash on my camera hotshoe (facing up or away) and it's flash will trigger the strobes. I have a sync cable to one flash and use light sync for the other anyway.

The thing that's frustrated me with Apple is the long wait for even minor product updates. The Merom update across the line should be a no brainer especially since the chip is more efficient and is easy to implement. Almost every other manufacturer announced Merom laptops already. Knowing Apple though, they'll just drag it out without mercy and only do the Merom updates in January for Macworld. In the meantime, we'll all be wondering if perhaps next week would be the right time to buy a new notebook because of some hot new rumor. Very frustrating. Now that Apple has switched to Intel, why not do chip updates without the fanfare that accompanied the minor PowerPC updates?
What long wait? Merom was just introduced last week, and nobody is shipping computers with Merom yet. Apple is moving away from just doing product refreshes at MWSF. In order to maximize media exposure, Apple has recently been upgrading a few products at a time (usually 2-3), but avoids introducing something on the same day as another manufacturer.

Apple will introduce Merom-based products this month, you can count on it.

After all, when was the last time AppleInsider and ThinkSecret agreed on anything? ;)

Not surprising really. Anyone I know who was 'curious' about switching changes their mind once they have bought into the eco system with an iDevice and get used to the combination of UI, solid build and design.

I kind of went the other way 5 months ago, being a Mac user for the last 15 years as a student and then professionally in the graphic design field I decided to give one of these PCs a try..

As I couldn't make up my mind whether to replace my iBook G3 with a Macbook/Macbook Pro/iPad, I decided to go for a cheap and cheerful HP G62 dual core laptop as a 'stop gap' solution for 350 just to see if PCs are as bad as some people make them out to be.

I have to say my experience in the last 5 months has been ok-ish, yes it is mildly annoying that the constant update requests, long bootups, occasional crash happy nature (and fragile) of Windows 7 has made me think about chucking the laptop out of the window (no pun intended). The fan can get bloody loud and gets quite hot and battery life is poor. But I accept that you get what you pay for and I guess that encapsulates the experience of the average Windows user who is willing to pay a substandard price for a substandard user experience.

As a result, my experience will not make me want to buy any PC products again. I've bought it just for browsing the web and syncing the iPod Touch to iTunes (which is doesn't seem to work aswell in Win7), somehow I can't run iTunes 10.2 which is another bloody annoying issue..

I cannot wait to get the new SandyBridge iMac later this year and maybe iPad 3 next year so until then will put up with my substandard PC product to gather dust / or smash it with a hammer / simply get rid of on eBay.

It will be Macs only for me going forward ;)

I'm definately not a PC :D And Windows 7 sucks compared to OSX. Actually bag of sh_te is a better description!

Why the **** would Apple ever pre-install Windows on a Mac.

If they went that route then they might as well just cancel all develop on OS X, because they would need that money to pay Microsoft.

I honestly feel that Boot Camp is one of the worst things that Apple could ever do, but they had to appease the little kids. But just wait until the first virus hits your Windows partition and screws up the boot sector of your drive and you're unable to start either OS.

    God, some people!

Your windows installation will not hurt your OSX installation.
They don't see eeach other, and windows is on a seperate partition.

Stop calling people a moron if you don't know what you are talking about.

Boot camp basically eliminated the need to ever buy a PC.
It was an incredibly smart move.

Yeah the benefit for C2D is the bigger cache size mostly. That's only available on 2GHz and up AFAIK.

I'd still rather have the new potentially bug fixed hardware though.

...and 64 bit, and better SIMD processing etc. Recent MacWorld benchmarks show the same clockspeed C2D 28% faster than the CD in iTunes encoding. That sold it to me.

I think Mac sales are directly tied to the Halo affect of the iOS devices. The more they sell there, the more people open up to Mac as an alternative. With Lion having more iOS like interfaces, it will make it even more natural for new customers.
I agree the Halo effect is a huge influence. Someone who's never owned an Apple computer buys an iPhone, finds out how well it integrates with a MBP, and a computer is sold. It's as simple as that.
