Keberadaan media sosial berbasis web seperti Facebook dan Twitter bagi sebagian besar perusahaan mengancam produktivitas karyawannya. Tak hanya itu, aplikasi yang ada di dalam media sosial itu juga bisa melumpuhkan keamanan jaringan, dan membuka data-data sensitif perusahaan.

Ancaman ini coba diperingatkan oleh perusahaan keamanan jaringan WatchGuard Technologies Inc. Dalam sesi wawancaranya dengan kami di Ritz Carlton, Jakarta,  President & CEO WatchGuard, Joe Wang, coba memaparkan alasannya.

"Menurut riset kami, ancaman terhadap jaringan korporat yang paling cepat perkembangannya saat ini adalah aplikasi media sosial berbasis web. Ada sejumlah alasan mengapa aplikasi media sosial bisa mendatangkan risiko bagi bisnis, sebesar apapun ukurannya," kata Wang.

Kehilangan Produktivitas

Dalam paparannya dijelaskan, sejumlah lembaga riset telah melaporkan bahwa Amerika Serikat kehilangan milliaran dollar AS per tahun akibat penurunan produktivitas.

"Karyawan kehilangan produktivitas karena waktunya tersedot ke situs-situs media sosial. Itu sebabnya diperlukan application control untuk membatasi dan mengelola penggunaannya. Karena Facebook dan Twitter sejatinya juga bermanfaat untuk produktivitas di segmen industri tertentu," kata Wang.

Meski demikian, walaupun situs-situs media sosial juga bermanfaat untuk kolaborasi dan komunikasi, namun menurutnya, administrator TI kerap kesulitan untuk mengelola dan mengendalikan aplikasi web yang berupa games, di Facebook misalnya.

Ancaman Malware

WatchGuard sendiri memprediksikan jaringan sosial akan menjadi sumber serangan malware dalam beberapa ke depan karena tiga alasan.

Pertama, situs jejaring sosial berkembang atas dasar kepercayaan. Tujuan orang menggunakan media sosial adalah untuk saling berinteraksi dengan orang-orang yang dianggap 'teman'.

Artinya, ada kepercayaan dalam interaksi tersebut. Padahal, media sosial tidak memiliki kemampuan teknis untuk melakukan validasi apakah mereka yang dianggap teman itu adalah orang yang sebenarnya.

Lingkungan yang berdasarkan kepercayaan pada media sosial ini adalah ladang yang subur untuk penipuan dengan metode social engineering (rekayasa sosial).

Kedua, situs jejaring sosial memiliki banyak kelemahan teknis. Teknologi Web 2.0 memang menjanjikan sejumlah keunggulan, namun di dalamnya juga tersimpan berbagai kelemahan.

Kompleksitas dari pengembangan aplikasi Web 2.0 bisa menciptakan kesalahan pada kode pemrograman sehingga aplikasi itu rawan terhadap ancaman aplikasi Web seperti SQL Injection dan serangan cross-site scripting (XSS).

Apalagi, konsep Web 2.0 yang mengizinkan pengguna yang tidak diketahui kredibilitasnya memasukkan konten ke website bertentangan dengan paradigma sekuriti tradisional.

"Secara sederhana, situs web media sosial lebih rawan terhadap eksploitasi kelemahan Web dibandingkan situs Web yang tidak interaktif," papar Wang.

Ketiga, popularitas jejaring sosial. Menurut lembaga analis Compete, Facebook adalah tujuan berselancar di Internet yang paling populer setelah Google, diikuti Twitter dan YouTube.

"Para penyerang tertarik dengan popularitas situs-situs seperti itu karena mereka bisa mendapatkan return on investment atas serangan yang mereka lakukan," kata Wang

Hal senada juga dikatakan oleh Hendra Kurniawan, Product Manager Hitachi Modern Sales Indonesia. Menurutnya sebelum meluncurkan suatu produk, pihaknya akan mempelajari terlebih dulu pasar dan permintaan pasar.

Namun dirinya menegaskan bahwa pihaknya telah memiliki teknologinya, sehingga jika memang ternyata dalam perjalanannya dirasa bisa dipasarkan dalam waktu dekat, maka pihaknya akan segera meluncurkannya.

"Since we found him already controlling the space station, we're sure that he is related to HAL. But we'll see," Coleman said.

In a Twitter update, R2 announced: "Check me out. I'm in space!" A NASA employee on the ground posted the tweet.

Nespoli attached NASA's waist-high R2 to a fixed pedestal, where it'll remain with its fists clenched and its arms folded against its chest until testing begins in May possibly. NASA initially planned to launch the Glory mission on Feb. 23, but called off the attempt just 15 minutes before liftoff due to a technical malfunction with the satellite's Taurus XL rocket. A malfunctioning computer was sending launch controllers incorrect information on the rocket's status, NASA officials said at the time.



"Those issues have been resolved," NASA officials said in a statement this week.

The $424 million Glory mission is aimed at studying how radiation from the sun, along with small particles called aerosols, affect Earth's atmosphere and climate. Aerosols can be natural – created by desert dust and volcanoes – or can have manmade origins such as air pollution

The satellite weighs about 1,157 pounds (525 kilograms). It is just over 6 feet (nearly 2 meters) tall and 4.6 feet (1.4 meters) wide, making it about the height of a tall adult human and as wide as an oil barrel.

HOUSTON – Astronauts on the shuttle Discovery will put the final NASA touch on the International Space Station today (March 1) when they add a storage module that will act as a big space closet for the orbiting lab.

The module, formally known as the Permanent Multipurpose Module, or PMM, will provide much-needed storage space on the station to warehouse equipment and other spare components.

The module, which is named Leonardo and is the size of a small bus, has been packed inside Discovery's cargo bay since the shuttle blasted off last week. The shuttle is delivering the space closet as its final contribution to the massive International Space Station before being retired along with the rest of NASA's shuttle fleet later this year

Discovery's astronaut crew will get an early start to the day, with the robotics operations for the removal of the new closet module from shuttle's payload bay set to begin at 8:08 a.m. EST (1308 GMT).

The Permanent Multipurpose Module is about 21 feet (6.4 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 meters) wide. It was one of three cargo-carrying Multipurpose Logistics Modules built for NASA by the Italian Space Agency and was delivered to the U.S. agency in 1998. Discovery's current mission is the eighth flight of the now PMM module to the space station. The module made its first flight in 2001. For this flight, engineers have added some extra debris shielding, power systems and other gear to outfit the module for a permanent stay on the space station.

Discovery's crew will begin installing the station closet module at 9:48 a.m. EST (1448 GMT) – the job is expected to take about an hour. The PMM will be permanently attached to the bottom of the space station on the Earth-facing side of NASA's Unity node.

This space closet is the final American contribution to the assembly of the multinational laboratory.

So, there's a lot that we're learning up here. It's a really magnificent place."







No free rides into space

The station's closet module is not arriving at the space station empty-handed. It is packed with about 6,500 pounds (over 2,900 kilograms) of cargo, including a spare treadmill and spare components for the station's thermal control and water management systems.

Also tucked away inside the module is a dexterous humanoid robot that will become a permanent resident on the space station.

The robot, called Robonaut 2, hitched a ride to the station onboard Discovery and is part of a technology demonstration by NASA and General Motors to assess the potential role of robot assistants on the space station.

With the impending retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet, the station will lose the enormous cargo-carrying capability of the orbiters. The last few shuttle missions are intended to stock up the station as much as possible before the shuttles are grounded.

But, a separate problem also exists on the space station, and after 10 years of being continuously inhabited by humans, the laboratory is running out of extra storage space. The extra storage module is expected to help with this problem.

Once the module is installed, the astronauts will also be able to use the space to conduct scientific experiments.

After the storage room is attached to the station, the module will be pressurized so the astronauts can go inside later today to prepare to unpack its contents.

The shuttle and station crew will now have an extra day to transfer cargo to and from the PMM, as Discovery's mission management team decided yesterday (Feb. 28) to extend the STS-133 mission by one day.

HOUSTON – A pair of spacewalking astronauts working outside the International Space Station zoomed through their mission's first spacewalk today (Feb. 28) despite a system failure that temporarily shut down the orbiting lab's robotic arm while someone was riding it.

Discovery shuttle astronauts Steven Bowen and Alvin Drew were outside the space station working with a huge ammonia pump – a refrigerator-size piece of the station's cooling system – when the robotic arm went offline. Bowen, stuck holding the ammonia pump at the end of the 57-foot (17-meter) robotic arm, simply had to wait it out


"I'm fine as long as it's not too much longer," Bowen said.

Turns out, he didn't have to wait too long. Soon, crewmates inside the station fired up a backup system.

"I've got a hot-shot station crew that moved this robotic work station in a second," shuttle astronaut Michael Barratt of NASA radioed the spacewalkers.

Stuck on a station arm

The robotics system glitch occurred inside the station's seven-window Cupola module, which gives robotic arm operators panoramic views of the orbiting lab's exterior while moving its robotic arm. It shut down as station commander Scott Kelly and Barratt were maneuvering Bowen to his next worksite.

Kelly and Barratt quickly moved to a twin work station in the Discovery Laboratory and were able to resume their work after only a short delay. [Inside and Out: The International Space Station]

"We're only 15 minutes down, so that was a nice, quick recovery from that," said Discovery astronaut Nicole Stott, who helped choreograph the spacewalkers.

The delay pushed the spacewalkers about 20 minutes behind schedule, but Bowen and Drew managed to make up some of that time during later tasks.

Robotics officers here at NASA's Johnson Space Center were eventually able to get the Cupola work station back up and running, and kept it in a back-up mode for the rest of the spacewalk.

Space in a bottle?

Aside from the robotics control shutdown, the first spacewalk of Discovery's STS-133 mission went relatively smooth. A second spacewalk is set for Wednesday (March 2).

Today's spacewalk ended at 5:20 p.m. EST (2220 GMT) for a total of 6 hours and 34 minutes of orbital work.

Bowen and Drew installed a power extension cable, moved the broken ammonia pump to a new storage point, attached a wedge under one of the station's exterior cameras and performed other maintenance activities.

Drew even captured some of the vacuum of space in a metal bottle for a science experiment sponsored by Japan's space agency. The container will be returned to Earth at the end of Discovery's STS-133 mission.

Inside Discovery, Stott played the song "Message in a Bottle" by the Police to commemorate the occasion.

Big spaceships, bigger space station

While working outside, Bowen and Drew caught some unique views of the space station, which is currently home to an international collection of spacecraft from four different space fleets.

The spaceship mix includes: a European cargo ship called the Automated Transfer Vehicle 2 (ATV), a Japanese cargo vessel known as HTV-2, a Russian cargo ship, two Russian Soyuz crew capsules and the shuttle Discovery.

"I've decided the HTV and ATV are both big," Bowen joked as he stood at the tip of the station's robotic arm to retrieve the broken cooling pump module.

Today's spacewalk was Bowen's sixth and the first for Drew.

Bowen, a veteran spacewalker, was a last-minute crew replacement for astronaut Timothy Kopra, who was the STS-133 mission's lead spacewalker. Kopra was injured in a bicycle accident less than six weeks before Discovery's launch, forcing him to sit out on the orbiter's historic final flight.

Kopra remained involved in today's spacewalk, however, by providing support from mission control here at the Johnson Space Center.

"You're a good man for the job," Kopra radioed to Bowen prior to the start of the spacewalk.

At the end of the spacewalk, Kopra was one of the first people to congratulate the two spacewalkers on a successful outing. He especially congratulated rookie spacewalker Drew.

"Congratulations on a stellar job on your first spacewalk," Kopra told Drew. "Good job, dude."

Drew also became the 200th person in history to work in the vacuum of space, according to NASA officials.

Shortly after Bowen and Drew returned inside the space station, Mission Control radioed the station and shuttle crews to say that Discovery's STS-133 mission will be extended an extra day.

The extra day will give the crew the opportunity to complete more work on a storage module that will be attached to the station's Unity node tomorrow

Demikian dikabarkan NASA usai menerima laporan langsung dari ISS, yang dikutip VIVAnews dari Computer World, Selasa 1 Maret 2011.

Dua astronot NASA, Steve Bowen dan Alvin Drew, baru saja menyudahkan misi ruang angkasanya pada hari Senin ketika robot humanoid itu berhenti bekerja sesampainya di pesawat kubah 7 jendela.

Padahal, astronom membawanya untuk membantu mereka menginstal ekstensi ke pusat listrik (power cable). Para astronot juga memerlukan bantuannya ketika memindahkan modul pompa seberat 800 pound (setara 362 kilogram) untuk sebuah platform eksternal di mana ia akan "menumpang" untuk kembali ke Bumi pada misi selanjutnya. Namun, kedua misi itu gagal dilakukan.

Bowen dan Drew, yang telah menjalani misi ke-200 sebagai astronot, juga dijadwalkan untuk menginstal kamera di rangka eksternal dan membubuhkan dua ekstensi ke trek sepanjang rangka. Namun, misi ini belum diselesaikan.

Pesawat ulang alik milik NASA, Discovery, telah tiba di ISS atau stasiun ruang angkasa, Sabtu 26 Februari 2011. Ini merupakan kali terakhir pesawat berawak itu mengangkut manusia ke luar angkasa sejak Agustus tahun 1984.
