Yes they can BUT that is what he actually said. Unusual word choice?

    Yes. Unusual and uncool.
Ballmer's blatant over-use of the word "squirt," is nothing more than MS' marketing "genius" at work... going with the say-a-weird-word-so-much-that-it-will-catch-on-and-work-it's-way-into-our-vernacular, strategy. Feels so contrived. I can almost see the goof balls at MS sitting in some Redmond boardroom, watching a PowerPoint presentation on why "squirt" will help take down the iPod and finally make MS seem cool, pie charts and all.

And that's the thing about cool - you can't fabricate it (or, it most certainly can't feel fabricated). It has to feel natural, not contrived. Basically, either something is cool or it is not. In this case, Zune and MS are not cool.

Sure, there is more to market share than cool, to which MS can well attest.
That said, market share is overrated - if not, uncool.

Will Basic only play minesweeper? What does it *not* do that Ultimate-Double-Secret-Robot-Super-Monkey-Force-Go! edition does?

Thats a big expense and a very big risk. I dont think so.

Apple has $15 Billion in Cash...and as a shareholder, (i'm not alone here) am a little upset that they're not doing anything with it. A billion or two won't kill them.

Remember that the iphone is the most profitable product line that apple has. I think that they will continue this trend into the other products, however in order to do so, you must build the infrastructure. Apple will either buy out a current player in the wireless sector, or will slowly deploy their own network, slowly integrating existing products into it... convergence.

WOW!!!! 8 megapixe?!!!!!!! i remember like 5 years ago when i bought a 200$ camera and it was 6 megapixels and it was considered amazing and here is the iphone with a 8!!! ITS CRAZZZYYY:confused:

for the basic consumer, ie the market for the iphone, a 6 MP camera is more than enough. Heck 4MP is probably more than enough.

Only professionals and serious prosumers need those crazy 18MP, 60fps rigs like a Canon 7D.

Now if you can tell me that that 8MP sensor also supports low light settings to help Joe Public get better shots of Joe Jr and Jane Jr, then okay I might buy it. But just based on the MP, I am not buying it. I still say it is possible that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Be it, they aren't making anything for Apple or they are making a lower grade sensor and he merely assumed it was their highest

I am just tired of seeing people on here hoping for a mediocre upgrade... such as no design change and little speed bump...not referring to this thread in particular, but i see it in others..

I'm on a lot of boards and I've seen no one 'hoping' for a mediocre upgrade.

But I have seen a lot of folks smart enough to realize that the tech has plateau'd until there are useable LTE support and NFC support and thus it is likely that it will be a small upgrade this go around, just like from the 3g to the 3gs.

That's not 'hoping' that's just being realistic.

To me, this just feels like a slap in the face to ipad2 owners :(

Doesn't feel that way to me. perhaps because I have never seen the ipad as the beginning of the iOS release calendar, but the end. Which is also likely how Apple views it. It's always easier to go bigger than smaller so if you can get something to work in the iphone/touch, it's child's play to go up to the ipad. But fine tuning it first on the ipad doesn't equal cake in putting it in the iphone/touch.

Wooohooo hallelujah about friggin time it got a decent camera

the iphone has a 'decent' camera. Especially for the actual market, which isn't professional photographers but Daddy playing in the back yard with kiddies and wanting pics to send to Grandma.

Besides which, you could put a 18mp sensor in the phone and still have a crap camera if the controls, software etc suck.

Doesn't most of the internet use flash?

Nope. the main uses for Flash are games, ads and video playback. A few sites like movie and band sites will be full flash. But even before iOS came out many sites were dumping Flash due to accessibility concerns. When iOS came out, even more sites phased out Flash or created second 'mobile' sites that were Flash Free. when the Apps SDK came out, some of that group added apps as well or in place of the second site version.

Even the porn industry, long viewed as a touch stone for internet tech acceptance has openly been dropping Flash for HTML5 to increase their possible viewing.

That's because Best Buy stopped showing iPad 2 availability online a few weeks ago (and Milo requires this), because they are currently trying to fill their backlog of orders and reservations with every iPad they get. They stopped taking orders at the same time. Once they fulfill all their orders and start having stock, I'm sure they will switch the future back on, that let's you check local inventory.

On a side note, I went to an Apple store in Indianapolis, at 9:30am at the end of last week and there were about 150+ people in line. I didn't realize they were still opening the store an hour early every day to sell the iPads they had received in the previous day. I wonder how long this will go on for.

I dont know that this is correct, I've been checking their online local inventory every day, and availability shows up in patches all over, unfortunately all I have called about say it is for reserved units.

But the point is that when they got them in, it showed in the database.

You guys are missing the point.

Obviously the '64-bit' refers to the fact that the new Apple machines are going to have a slot to plug in Nintendo 64 cartridges...

I thought that was a little obvious at this point but I guess I was wrong.

If it's anything like the Whitebook I bought about 2.5 yrs ago, the plastic is coming off in chunks on the palm wrest. Mine (now a hand-me-down to my partner) is on its second palm wrest, and has already shed the same pieces.

my original core duo is begging me to take it out back and put it out of its misery. So glad I bought applecare with all the replacements. Poor girl has trouble running internet video now :(

There's been a debate for years over the differences in users between Mac & PC. One postulation is that Mac people are more savvy and personable, and will do something like walk over to a girl and offer up an ear bud, while the PC person would be too socially awkward to do that.

Actually I was with some friends out one day at student bar, and i took out my ipod nano, and a girl came up to me and said "wow you've got an ipod nano as well - they are so cool, I've got a black one too." We fell into a convesation and she let me share her earbud so that she could let me hear some songs she like, and I did the same. :)

Lets just say someone got lucky that night!:p

Rogue Amoeba has said they will no longer develop iPhone apps and will concentrate on the Mac. It had taken three months for Apple to release a bug fix. Does Rogue Amoeba suck too?

Time to buy an ipod, leave it in the box, then sell it in 30 years for $10,000? Try get Jobs to sign it first! How about $100,000?

And the first ipod had firewire?!?!?! What is this! We've downgraded!

Why are you guys all against 3D? I think its great, BUT I think its a given that you will be able to turn off the 3D.. And if that is the case then there is no problem really :P

I reaaally don't think Apple will implement this. It goes against everything they stand for.

-Apple likes ergonomic, comfortable experiences. 3D gives people headaches
-Apple hates styluses and other mandatory accessories. In most implementations of 3D, you have to wear glasses
-Apple is moving toward high-resolution displays. In many implementations, 3D halves the effective resolution
-Apple is all about content - high quality software, UI, etc. 3D encourages gimmicks
-Apple's mobiles have standard-setting battery life. 3D will likely drain batteries - by doubling the rendering requirement, increasing the required backlighting, or by keeping a camera active to track your head.

"3D" screams of unnecessary spec. There are so many drawbacks and so few benefits. If Apple has yet to implement Blu-ray, it will definitely be awhile before we see 3D.

I see. I wonder who conducted this sorely-needed poll? I bet they banned "Ahab the Arab" too.

If this is true, I would say it's pretty stupid, to say the least...same for "Perfekte Welle" from Juli in Germany, at the time of the Asian tsunami...

The board that oversees what the top 3 executives do at Apple knows more than you about production issues of MILLIONS of hi-tech devices.

Anybody familiar with production and distribution issues knows that despite excellent planning there may be issues during production that cannot be forecast.

Selling and shipping MILLIONS in a few weeks is a exactly fiasco for whom?
There are a lot of haters on this site. And I mean a LOT.

Plus there are a few people who have zero connection with reality. The type of people who ignore COGS, have no understanding of the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing and marketing, and disregard the basic laws of Newtonian physics. Basically, people who live in an effing dreamworld based on an totally domestic American worldview largely based on sci-fi movies and pop culture, with no real world experience as a contributor to a global economy.

    Thinkpads are built incredibly well.

I know what you're saying though, MOST windows laptops are crap.
    This... my T410 kills.

My Dell 1525 is what it is... a cheap laptop that has actually held up very well. Surprised me even. I expected a year to a year and a half tops out of it. Short of the track pad issue that Dell promptly replaced, it still looks brand new.
