DVD rental company Netflix is diving into original programming with the new Kevin Spacey series House of Cards, Deadline reports.
Netflix outbid networks including HBO and AMC for the series by committing to two seasons (26 episodes) upfront. Aside from mail-in DVDs, Netflix currently streams entire seasons of current and classic TV series. The company launched in 1997.
Two-time Oscar winner Spacey will star in House of Cards and will also executive produce the series with director David Fincher. Fincher, who has worked with Spacey on The Social Network and Se7en, will make his TV directorial debut on the show's pilot.
Based on the 1989 book and 1990 BBC miniseries of the same name, House of Cards is set at the end of Margaret Thatcher's tenure as prime minister and centers on a British politician aspiring to fill the position.
